“Bridge to Canada”

Believe it or not. For some reason, until this year. I had never taken the time to visit Niagara Falls. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. For sure you can see that the Canadian side is much more built up, and has a myriad of opportunities for activity, nightlife, dining, hotels etc.

What surprised me though was the raw natural beauty and the hidden gem of what used to be, but has somehow become forgotten on the american side. Although I did see some renovations going on, and some areas that looked newly renovated!

There were people there from all over the country, and the world in general. There were also a lot of Canadians coming across to get a look at the U.S. side, and to see their side from our point of view.

The image here is of the Rainbow Bridge to Canada. It was viewed from a tall platform above the Niagara River. You can get a sense of the beauty of the river, the bridge, and the activities on the Canadian side.

What you don’t see here is the immense beauty of the actual falls, and the other nature surrounding them on the U.S. side.

I’ll be giving you a taste of that sometime in the future.

“Brownie Hawkeye”

Well, here’s the post I promised you. While at the 2013 Motor Muster, I came across this beautiful 1955 Jaguar. The car itself was wonderful and in addition to that, the owners had also put a copy of Life magazine a 1956 issue, and a beautiful Brownie Hawkeye Camera!! Yay!!

The whole setup had a great vintage feel to it!! I took many shots of the car itself, but in reality what interested me more this time was the Brownie! 🙂

I got a bit of info together about this little wonder of a camera, and I thought I’d share it with you!

The Brownie Hawkeye cameras have a molded bakelite body and use a brilliant viewfinder. This is the Brownie Hawkeye non-synchronized non-flash model featured in this image.
This same camera was also manufactured in France as a Brownie Flash Camera. These cameras were no longer produced after 1961.

The Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model Camera is recognized as one of the most popular Brownie cameras made. It is easy to use and is still extremely popular with film photographers because it’s cheap to buy!
The big square negatives it produces are large enough for contact prints or can be enlarged for spectacular sharp prints. The bulb setting for time exposures rounds off this great camera.
This beautiful camera was designed by Arthur H. Crapsey, who also designed many other popular Kodak cameras.

I hope you enjoy this image today. I really love going back in time. It’s so nice when people take the time to get objects together that come from relatively the same time period. It really makes the whole experience just that much more memorable and fun!!

“Fly the Flags”

On a recent trip out to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore. I passed through Traverse City. As I drove along 31, which hugs the shore of Grand Traverse Bay, I kept seeing sailboats pass by on the clear blue water.

I decided to make a quick stop into a spot for viewing, hoping to get in some nice contrast with the beautiful blue water and white sailboats. While there, I headed up to where a jetty ended into an overlook area and two flags were flying in the breeze.

By the time I had reached, all the sailboats had long since sailed away! So consequently I never did get any images of the sailboats, but I did like this composition of a part of the jetty, a walkway, lines, flags, and clouds, so I grabbed this shot!

To me it really calls out summertime, and beauty! I hope it does for you too!

“Long Ago” mono

I came upon this lonely and broken down bench on a walk deep in the woods not too long ago. When I went to process it I felt that it should be done in monochrome. The feeling of loneliness and emptiness comes across much better.
Instead of writing just a post, to go along with the image. I decided to also include some lyrics from a song by The Carpenters from way back in the early 70’s. It’s one that I personally love!

“Seeing Red”

When we think of the saying “Seeing Red”, we don’t usually think good thoughts. We may think anger, frustration etc. Well in this case, seeing red is a good thing, a very good thing! 🙂
I noticed this fire hydrant a few months ago, and have been trying to find a good way to capture it. Yep, I know that sounds strange. Like, just how difficult could it be to get a shot of a fire hydrant! 😉 Each time I went to its location, which was several times, the time just wasn’t right, things weren’t clicking!!
On a whim, during the snow I decided to go check it out, and lo and behold the time was perfect! Just what I wanted. Something bright and red, standing out against the white of the snow, and the darkness of the day!
Something so simple, so everyday, something we may even take for granted. There it is, turned into an item of beauty! Something that can stand out on its own and say, I’m here!! Look at me!!
I hope you enjoyed this post, and image as much as I did making it! It was an image in my mind for months before it came to fruition! 🙂
